Fall in the Tundra

August 02, 2010 – Comments (3)

I am leaving the tundra this afternoon, but what a change in weather today.  The low last night was 7C or 44F and there is a chilling arctic wind today.  We have had as high as 30C during the day, or 86F during the past week.

It has been interesting.  The students have to do a project and a group of girls tested the local plants and rocks for spa treatments.  They made teas, facials, moisturizers, exfoliatants and even gave the cook a hot rock treatment.  I can see these girls one day developing their own beauty treatment line as it is a dream of one of them and that dream was the basis for how they decided on their project.

I am kind of glad that the one that wanted to skin a ground squirrel didn't have success with the snares she built...

I am out of the Tundra.  I have been bathing in the 15C or 57F lake and I mentioned I hadn't had a real bath for 10 days and the lady gave me a luxury suite with a massive jacuzzi tub for the regular room rate.  That was so nice...

When I was working in the arctic in the summer of '93 I distinctly remember having a blizzard on August 1st that year.  I don't remember the temperature and it likely wasn't that cold as the arctic goes, but there were some drifts 3-4' high in places.
