Although this blog doesn't discuss political issues too often...you may want to pay attention to developments below....

From the WSJ:

MOSCOW -- Russia is reasserting its role in Central Asia with a Kremlin push to eject the U.S. from a vital air base, along with a Moscow-led pact to form an international military force to rival NATO. The moves potentially complicate the new U.S. war strategy in Afghanistan.

The moves mark Russia's most aggressive steps yet to counter a U.S. military presence in the region that it has long resented. They pose a challenge for the administration of U.S. President Barack Obama, which sees Afghanistan as its top foreign-policy priority and is preparing to double the size of the American military presence there.

On Wednesday, Russia announced a financial rescue fund for a group of ex-Soviet allies and won their agreement to form a military rapid reaction force in the region that it said would match North Atlantic Treaty Organization standards. That came a day after Kyrgyzstan announced, at Russian urging, that it planned to evict the U.S. from the base it has used to ferry most of its troops into Afghanistan. Russia said the base may house part of the planned new force instead.

As nations run out of money, governments must look for ways to keep their populations occupied...especially the youth.  We know nations are running out of money....we know unemployment is exploding around the world....how do you think governments will keep their populations stimulated????

Panasonic cuts 15,000 jobs

China loses 20,000,000 jobs

Rioting in Greece and France

Lots of people have lots of free time with little chance of getting a replacement job.

Clearly, no CAPs player has detailed the loss of jobs like I have.....there was a reason....because it was clear where we were heading.......soon we will all know......

unless we all get together and craft a plan to get through the inevitable distress ahead.

I assume you're suggesting they'll do that by sending the boys off to war. Always a possibility, but these actions Russia is taking are not necessarily a reflection of that. Putin has been an aggressive nationalist for a long time now, well before this current economic collapse took place. And let's face it, he's never appreciated that base being right in his backyard- and Kyrgyzstan is closely allied with Russia, so they have no real compunction to help us by providing our armed forces with a staging area on their territory.

Putin wants to re-establish Russia to a place at the head table, and despite his personal friendship with ex-President George Dubya, he is deeply resentful of what he sees as America's attempts at global hegemony. And he is on the record multiple times as stating that he views a unipolar world centered and revolving around the United States as being simply intolerable to Russia, and that the world would be better off as a whole to not have that happen.

He is going to act aggressively to pursue what he perceives as being in the best interests of Russia, but he doesn't want a large and costly war any more than we do.

Alstry, sometime ago you mentioned in a blog that you were actually re-looking at gold, due to a change in events that you were picking up on. I have been away from the country for a while and have not been able to follow CAPS blogs for the last 3 weeks, so am unsure if you have written about this? Could you please let us know if there have been any changes in your thinking regarding that?

On a different note, I read the antagonistic remarks between TDRH and Donner vs yourself. I am fairly new to CAPS and have just been reading and learning, this has become an extremely important educational tool to me. I just find it strange that it can get so competitive and nasty. There was even a fellow Fool mentioning the Fires of Hell! I think most of the participants here, are very generous with their thoughts and their research, personally I wish we did not get that personal over what are in the end well meaning opinions.

I appreciate your thoughts as I do those of most of the members on CAPS and thank you all for sharing your knowlesge.
