Four New Highs

March 29, 2013 – Comments (4)

Four stocks in my portfolio tagged along, or helped push, the S&P500 to new highs on Thursday.

I decided to celebrate by taking 52-week High-ku to a Fool article.

There's a little bit of commentary along with the haiku.  On the four stocks - I'd buy BDX at current prices;  am holding MMP based on price; MCD is fairly priced but just holding because it's already a top position, and thinking about either trimming or selling calls against the fourth.

Opinions, comments or questions are welcome, especially if you've got some thoughts on McCormick.

Fool on! Russ

Well you might be happy to know that I like their spices and so have contributed to the profits of your holdings.  With that said it does look like it might have gotten ahead of itself and due for a small pullback.  Selling some covered calls may not be a bad idea provided you are ok with the stock being called away.

You do have earnings coming out on tuesday.  Question is how do you think they will report?  This company has grown its eps year after year after year along with its dividend even through 2 recessions.

@awallejr - I don't have clue how they'll report.  Last quarter was a mixed bag that included weaker than expected guidance and took a slice out of the stock price.  You're right about the consistent earnings and dividend growth, it's just that MKC looks pricey when compared to some other quality food stocks like Smucker's (which isn't particularly cheap either).  At current prices for the calls, there would be worse things than collecing a premium and having the stock called away at $75.

@HCG - I used the Montreal Steak seasoning last night when we fired up the grill for the first time this year.  Adds a nice crust with a little pop AND the Caps managed a shootout a win over Buffalo.

Thanks for the comments.

Actually a lot of the food stocks seem pricey to me.  That is why I like DOLE and DF, they are transitional, niche but still low priced.  No dividends tho.
