How safe and consistent is GLD for those of us who don't want to deal with physical gold ?

Safe? Not very, IMO.

If you want safe, go with GTU or PHYS.

But understand the tax implications.

CEF is roughly half gold and half silver. So if you just want gold, it may not be for you.

GTU is run by the same people but is gold-only. Silver Bullion Trust (http://www.silverbulliontrust.com/) is silver-only. All at the same address (and interlinked websites).

So, yes, CEF should be just as safe as GTU.
