Though the Environmental Protection Agency has postponed a decision on the potential ethanol boost, studies show promising potential.

In a letter to ethanol support association Growth Energy, the U.S. EPA said, "To achieve the renewable fuel requirements in future years, it is clear that ethanol will need to be blended into gasoline at levels greater than the current limit of 10%." Growth Energy is pushing for the legalization of E15 gasoline, which would have up to 15% ethanol by volume. The EPA explained that should test results remain supportive, the agency "would be in a position to approve E15 for 2001 and newer vehicles" in the mid-2010 timeframe, noting that if problems arise a decision could be delayed further.

The news spurred optimism among biofuel investors, sending the Ethanol and Biofuel Stocks Index up by 7%. The sector is now outperforming the S&P 500 by more than 16% over the last month.

Omaha, Nebraska-based fuel-grade ethanol player Green Plains Renewable Energy (NASDAQ: GPRE - News) is leading the sector higher with an 13% spike today. MGP Ingredients (NASDAQ: MGPI - News) and The Andersons (NASDAQ: ANDE - News) are following with gains of more than 6.5%.

As of the most recent 13F filings with the SEC, which were due in mid-November, 27 Pros were holding Archer Daniels Midland (NYSE: ADM - News) shares among their top-15 U.S.-listed equity positions. The stock is moving higher by more than 3% today, as is ethanol and sugar play Cosan Limited (NYSE: CZZ - News) and consumer electronics retailer turned alternative energy investment company Rex Stores (NYSE: RSC - News).

As of this writing, the Ethanol and Biofuel Stocks Index is one of the the top-10 performing tickerspy Indexes over the last month, up by 23.8%.

Picked the entire Ethanol sector today, but couldn't pick PEIX because its below 100M cap. Sector is leaner this time around and the survivors should benefit greatly from the reduced competition.

ADM, ANDE, MGPI, are my favorites currently.

MGP Ingredients, Seacor Energy form venture to restart Pekin, Ill., plant
Kansas City Business Journal - by Jerry LaMartina Staff Writer

* MGP Ingredients CEO expects ‘significant positive turnaround’ for quarter

MGP Ingredients Inc. and an affiliate of Seacor Energy Inc. have formed a joint venture to reactivate distillery operations at MGP’s plant in Pekin, Ill.

Illinois Corn Processing Holdings Inc., the Seacor Energy affiliate, and MGP Ingredients (Nasdaq: MGPI), based in Atchison, Kan., formed Illinois Corn Processing LLC, which will own and operate the Pekin plant. The plant will product alcohol for beverage, industrial and fuel applications, MGP said in a Monday filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission.

Seacor Energy paid MGP $15 million for a 50 percent ownership interest in Illinois Corn Processing LLC. An affiliate of Seacor Energy will provide additional capitalization, as will a revolving loan secured by the facility, MGP said.

MGP spokesman Steve Pickman said in an interviw that the term loan is for $10 million and that the revolving loan is for as much as $20 million.

But Chairman John Speirs said in the filing that the company will use proceeds from the deal to reduce debt. The venture partners also agreed to share profits from the plant.

“With the completion of MGPI’s transformation with this joint venture, the company emerges more focused, more profitable and with a significantly improved balance sheet,” Speirs said in the filing. Report this comment

I don't believe ethanol is the future fuel for authomobiles.  It's just being pushed for political reasons and because corn from which it's made is widely available.  Besides, it's less fuel efficient than good old gas and raises prices on food.

I think the future is in electrical cars, which are expected to be mass produced at the end of 2010.  I can't wait to see that happen..
