WASHINGTON - Iran may try to distract the international community from its nuclear program by heating things up at Israel's northern border via Hezbollah – dozens of members of the US House of Representatives wrote in a letter addressed to US Secretary of State Hilary Clinton on Friday.

The letter was sent ahead of Lebanese President Michel Suleiman's upcoming visit to the White House, scheduled for December 14, and following the coalition agreement in the Lebanese government allowing Hezbollah to hold on to its arms.

Venezuela's government took over three more banks Friday, adding to a growing list of smaller banks in the oil-rich country that have been seized by the government this week on charges that its owners illegally used deposits for their own enrichment.

The growing scandal has unnerved depositors about which banks are safe, posing a threat to the broader banking system. It has also become a potential political liability for President Hugo Chávez, because the owners of the seized banks were seen as close to top officials.

You ask what we would trade for oil, if not gold.

You wouldn't trade for it.

If you have the oil you have the power. You have the fuel that everyone needs to keep their war machines going. You would have to be willing to defend that oil with your life.

 

It's been a mandate of ours to keep an open oil supply through peaceful means, as that's far cheaper than through force, but when it comes down to it, a world war is clearly in the making.

I'm not looking forward to the global events that will transpire in my lifetime.
