Google and Privacy

April 30, 2009 – Comments (4)

There are certain things about google that I truly like.  I find their search engine superior to all others I have tried and the google reader automatically sends me news and blogs of interest to one place where I can scan the headlines and the first 3 lines to decide whether to read the full story.

Privacy, unauthorized control of my computer, tracking and theft of bandwidth are issues with google for me.  Where I am the internet is very expensive and near as I can figure google uses a ton of background internet and I have not been able to disable it.  I installed some google stuff on my computer that I want permanently removed and my attempts to remove it have been unsuccessful.

I came across an article that is pointing out a number of issues with google and I tend to agree that some legislation is in order to control some of their activities.

I understand your concerns dwot, but the fact is that most other companies do a lot worse. They do basically the same things and don't tell you about it. In the US, (I know your in Canada) If you want car insurance, they run your credit, and if you have a poor rating, they charge you a lot more, even if you have a perfect driving record. They sell that info to other companies as well. Also, if you have a rewards card with any grocery store, they love to sell your preference of feminine products to anybody that's buying,

Google takes a refreshing approach. At least they tell you that these are the things we look at and this is what we do with the information. In just about every service that they offer, they give you the option to opt out, and when you opt out, they don't try to still secretly monitor your internet activity. When you want to know the information that they have, they give it to you! Try that with any other company!

I'm more wary than most people on giving up my privacy, but I don't worry about the info that google collects. My 2 most searched terms are "Why am I a stock market idiot?" and "Can I see dwot naked?"
