What are these cuts to cancer care all about?

The government has cut Medicare payments for cancer care in 2010 and will continue to make cuts through 2013. Because Medicare covers so many people, it also influences how insurance companies pay for cancer care. So, these cuts eventually affect all cancer patients, not just Medicare patients.

For example, the government has severely cut payments for the administration of cancer drugs and related services by over 25% since 2004. Now, the government is decreasing these payments by 5% each year from 2010 through 2013. According to a study just released, Medicare covered only 57% of the costs of these services in 2009. That will decline to 48% by 2013. Payment cuts are also being made to imaging tests — such as PET and CT scans — that help find and manage cancer.

Right and the government said trust us. There will be health care for all. Well it does look like the ax has been dropping on Grandma and Grandpa all along the time they said trust us. You silly progressives. I tried to help your Grandmother and Grandfather while you were fighting me for Universal Health Care. You would not listen to this tea bager. You called me a lair and a hater.  Ron Paul told you. You still did not listen.

I did not like the bed we just got out of. I'm sorry I cannot just blindly jump on board with this petition. 

I would also like you to know that posting a RonPaul video whining about the recently passed healthcare bill as though it was the cause of these medicare cuts that a Republican Congress and a Republican House and a Republican President passed in 2004 and made the law of the land until 2013 might be politicing a bit to hard. Temporary increases to these payment cuts were passed as stop-gaps by more recent Congress's and another is being held up by the GOP in the Senate according to the authors of the petition, first by S. Jim Bunning and now S. Tom Coburn. Perhaps you should petition him directly.

You also have the option of appealing to private insurers to step in with affordable coverage plans to make up the costs of Presidents Bush's legislation.

Finally on longer term cost concerns the early diagnosis of some cancers is not extending lives, and early diagnosis of other types does but as of right now oncologists are being paid to treat the types they can heal and the types they cannot. 

I am reasonably certain that the real solution to high cancer rates is not curing cancer but preventing it by removing the volume of cancer causing agents we are exposed to an a daily basis, from flame retardents in our rugs and clothes, to the chemicals in our lipstick, to the chemicals in our food, air and water.

That however will not help any of us or our kids. Maybe our grandkids will see the benefit.

Government health care in America is a misnomer.  Health care in America is privately owned - not federally owned.  The only government health care in America belong to the Veterans Administration.

I find it amusing that a so called 'free market libertarian' is petitioning in favor of more government spending.

He should be applauding the cut in medicare/medicaid, not petitioning against it.

So much for his free market principles.
