Gray hat on how to make yourself popular...

June 01, 2007 – Comments (6)

Alas, it's possible to game your own rec count and pump your own blog posts to make them look more popular than they are. I just confirmed it, with firefox, and it can be done pretty quickly. I bet I can get this post to 10 recs in a couple of minutes...

Hmm. perhaps scratch that. I pumped the last may post up to 7 recs pretty easily, but upon blogging this and trying it out, it appears a bit tougher... That's good...

I long to be popular.  I have been added as a favorite by two players.  I weep, however, when I see so many players who have terrible scores and little in the way of helpful pitches and blogs who are nonetheless more poular than me.

At least I can recommend my own blogs so I can be assured that at least I am reading them.

I can't even get acknowledged as having a blog. But my cats love me, so what else matters?

Blogs - not so much about content, but definitely about character.  Beneficial blogs seem to have very little following while entertaining blogs rise to the top.  In today's world, who would imagine that happening? ;)

Everywhere you go people play silly games for popularity.  I think web designers need to be aware of the way people do these things and design them so that the system isn't set up so that only garbage gets promoted on the pages people go to if they are looking to see who's writing a blog.

For example, on Stockhouse the 10 most recent posts show up and there are a couple bloggers that do repeat blogs and so all 10 lines will point to their blog.  They also post frequent drivel.  So, they are getting viewers, and another part of the site promotes blogs with lots of views.

Another site they tried to give better visibility to blogs that got more comments.  A few people actually went back to some of their older posts and made hundreds of comments to themselves.

I like blogs but I think it is a challenge to figure out how to design so that they are a quality thing for readers and also so that blogger have the opportunity to have their works read.
