WHERE THE UNTHINKABLE BECOMES REALITY

SARATOGA SPRINGS — A prominent thoroughbred industry leader is sounding the alarm about the possibility of a Saratoga summer without racing.

Impossible as it might seem, consider that dozens of the state’s most popular state parks are facing closure, a Kansas City school district might go bankrupt throwing 300 teachers out of work, and President Barack Obama wants to scrap a program that would limit NASA’s ability to put astronauts into space.

In these financially desperate times, nothing is safe including the "August Place to Be," says Barry Ostrager, president of Saratoga Springs-based New York Thoroughbred Breeders Inc.

"This isn't a cry wolf situation," said Ostrager, who’s also a New York Racing Association board member. "This is quite real and the time clock to Armageddon for Saratoga is really ticking down. If NYRA can’t operate the Saratoga meet a tsunami is going to hit this city. The restaurant and hotel industry will be devastated, countless local merchants will unquestionably go out of business, and the economy of Saratoga will virtually collapse."

I am familiar with Chris' perspectives and agree with some and disagree with others.

At this point, no one really KNOWS for sure what to do because no one really knows how this will play out. Basically, much of the world is insolvent and fraud is rampant at all levels.

Each of us has views...but one thing for sure, there has never been anything like the present in history before due to current interdependence around the world.

BOISE - Idaho may see more budget cuts next year.

At the state of the state address back in January, Governor Otter announced the state faced an 83 million dollar budget shortfall.

To pick up the slack, public areas like schools took massive cuts.

Now the state is losing even more money.

Idaho has 41 million fewer dollars than Governor Otter projected back in January.

And in an already troubling economic time, that's not a good sign for public institutions.

"The signs are not good. The fact that we're down another 15-million dollars in February in income tax is not a good sign," said Governor Otter. "We've spent most all the rainy day funds. There's no savings like we had last year. We had the opportunity to plug some money back into the system because we had some savings accounts. We've spent the savings accounts."

It will be more clear when the dollar starts to lose even more strength in the coming months as the Fed gov't will have to add more "stimulus" into the economy because of these short falls.

What people will not get is the "stimulus" package will actually be a bailout for the states, however, it will be short lived because it will likely be chasing good money after bad. However in this case, the "good money" will be printed out of thin air.

The European states are making the tough choices and cutting.  We will eventually be forced to, as the cutting has just begun.  It will be dramatic.

I am in commodities 100% in my portfolio.  I've bought in and I'm leaving it.
