SARATOGA SPRINGS — A prominent thoroughbred industry leader is sounding the alarm about the possibility of a Saratoga summer without racing.
Impossible as it might seem, consider that dozens of the state’s most popular state parks are facing closure, a Kansas City school district might go bankrupt throwing 300 teachers out of work, and President Barack Obama wants to scrap a program that would limit NASA’s ability to put astronauts into space.
In these financially desperate times, nothing is safe including the "August Place to Be," says Barry Ostrager, president of Saratoga Springs-based New York Thoroughbred Breeders Inc.
"This isn't a cry wolf situation," said Ostrager, who’s also a New York Racing Association board member. "This is quite real and the time clock to Armageddon for Saratoga is really ticking down. If NYRA can’t operate the Saratoga meet a tsunami is going to hit this city. The restaurant and hotel industry will be devastated, countless local merchants will unquestionably go out of business, and the economy of Saratoga will virtually collapse."
