Has Tony Soprano Moved into Healthcare?
Interesting article on UnitedHealth (UNH) in the WSJ yesterday (subscription required). The gist of the article is that after signing up Lab Corp (LH) as its new lab of choice, UnitedHealth has been trying to strong-arm doctors into using only Lab Corp's labs. While it's to be expected that they want to make the most of that relationship/contract, they seem to be overstepping their bounds a bit and are trying to fine doctors who are referring patients to out-of-network labs.
Sounds like the New Jersey waste management industry if you ask me... Makes me wonder whether doctors are going to start getting "friendly" visits from UnitedHealth "associates."
"You know, the family doesn't like it when you use Quest. Be a pal Doc and start sending your patients over to Lab Corp. I'd hate to have to pay you a house call."
As a disclosure, I own shares of UnitedHealth.
