Housing Cleaning and a Dangit!

December 28, 2010 – Comments (5)

So for the last week or so I've been going through all my open CAPS picks, checking to see if I still believed my original thesis. In a bunch of cases (especially the ones from '07 and '08),  the answer is no, so I closed them. This locks in both negative points and in-accuracy, but if your thesis is wrong, your thesis is wrong and you have to take the pain at some point.

The purpose of this is to clear the decks for better picks that I have a thesis on. I will be adding these as I find them over the next month or so.

The Dangit is that a fast food company that I've been waiting to IPO got bought by a private equity group. The restaurant is Noodles and Company which I have mentioned in previous blogs. The private equity group is Catterton Partners. Now, know private equity, they have an exit plan, but it will probably be at a price way more than I want to pay. So I may have to wait on this one for quite a while.

Ah well, lots of other restaurant chains out there.

I wish I'd cleaned my picks when I pretty much stopped playing.  I never hung onto losers in real life.  I suppose I just never wanted to put the time into accessing the stocks so I just left them.

Umm, Noodles and Company = yummy!  Would have made a great IPO opportunity.

Check out BJ's Restaurant and Brewery (BJRI) for a potential investment.  They just got a nice write-up in Barrons along with Chipotle and Panera Bread.

And they just reported a 77% increase in Sales!

Here I thought you were going to give a write up on Clorox CLX which has all those household cleaners. I've never heard of a Noodles and Company. If I invested in a restaurant it should be Papa John's or Panera based on the amount of our discretionary money they get. I need an eating out coupon.

I started purging some picks also as we crossed the new year.  I found a few dead tickers and changed tickers and tried to get MF to update them.  In some respects purging off what you no longer believe in can be refreshing.  I'm still hung up on closing a few that have a minute chance of going green through some great scientific discovery or change in heart of the FDA, but I'm resolving to close them to. After this much time, I wasn't right when I called them, I wouldn't, or don't still have them in Real Life, and while I would happily take a miricle if it happened, I didn't earn it.  I've also resolved to try to keep below the max pick level, but that ain't working out so well shopping sprees are excessive and my stumbling on the bad stuff just too easy right now.
