I Still Can't Take The Name iPad

It sounds like something iCarly needs on a heavy day.

Unacceptable.

I am far too shallow to walk around with this thing.

Steve Jobs needs to man up and rename it the iSlate. Or the Mac Slate.  These things matter.

Also, it will help ease the perception that Jobs/Mac is arrogant, a word Droid uses in its commercials to attack the iPhone.

Bottom line: The iPad is an awful, awful name.  Mac bungled this piece of marketing in the most gruesome fashion and they should step up and change the name.  Coming on the heels of the iPhone the thing looks stupid enough - like the way a clown uses a giant pencil.

I want one, and I think it has the potential to radically - and positively - advance the meaning of multimedia, but I just can't feel superior to everyone waltzing around with my giant "iPad." This is the kind of dingbat move I expect from Microsoft.  Zune yer arse.  If the Zune could shave my head without nicking it, kick out can't-miss stock tips and accurately interpret my dreams, I still wouldn't own something called a Zune.  And I don't wanna own no "iPad."

Step up Steve - admit you made a mistake, and fix it.

Sincerely and Shallowly,

H. Wood Dan

Even Mac Pad would sound better, although still not great... I think most everyone thought it would be the I-Slate. However Jobs can't name it what eveyone thinks it will be... so he has a tampon name.

Dude - Mac Pad is way closer to Maxi, no thanks.

I love women and am a devout feminist muscle man by the way so no offense to the better sex.  If anything I think this name was picked with very little input from women, most of whom, I'm confident, would prefer the name iSlate as well.

It is an awful name and I'm pretty sure plenty of women agree. I had an immediate negative reaction (including far too many bad jokes to count) when it was first announced and did notice a lot of women felt the same way about it. Absolutely unreal. (And the fact that Mad TV did the iPad skit quite some time ago and somehow Apple still proceeded with this name? Bizarre.)

I actually didn't think anything of the name originally other than it is being a pad like a writing pad until everybody started talking about it in reference to women hygene. Now I can't get over it either.

Hey Alyce.  Thanks for commenting here.

Oh man - I missed the Mad TV sketch.

I know some people felt this issue would go away, but I don't think so.

I'm sure that 99% of what makes Mac so great is Jobs is relentless about not using focus groups and just making stuff they all know is great.  This time, I think that same way of thinking is going to bite him on the behind.

As always - absolute power corrupts absolutely, and it looks like this is the case here.

The problem is that Slate reminds me of that dreadful MSFT website.

Apple designed a 10" Ipod Touch, and decided to rename it for marketing purposes.

That actually isn't a bad idea, although I personally find it annoying.  That they chose the name Ipad is laughable.  Who came up with this, and how much did they get paid for the idea?

Borbality - Nice.  I love combo plays like that.  Though truth always beats fiction and the merger of Chicks with Dicks will never be beat.  Oy.

Chk - been doing some corporate work and there's a real desire among people to make sure that no one, in the ENTIRE world could be offended by content.  Everything has been done, been taken, comes with connotations - it's a big bad tough time to get by in this whole global economic crapfest. iSlate also reminds me of Fred Flintstone's boss.  And congrats on that sweet triple digit score by the way.

Melaschasm - I think Jobs makes these big calls almost entirely himself, with some high-level guys nodding in agreement.  At least that's what Fortune's most recent in-depth article on him seemed to imply.

any worse than Nintendo Wii?

honestly I don't think the dumb @$$ name will affect sales much

the Ipad has bigger problems, but i do think it's a precursor to the future of Personal Computing. Honestly most Americans don't need a computer. More and more just web surf and don't utilize their machines to the full extent.

oh and welcome back Mr ManPassion. :)

Hey Tasty L - thanks a lot for the welcome back.  The ManPassion lives.  I think that computers/personal gadgets are like cars - extensions of ourselves and how we wish to be seen. I actually think the Wii name is pretty cool.  But these disagreements and observations are always what make the market fun to watch.

Do you remember what a basement dweller Apple was before the I-Pod came out? Apple is built on MP3 players, the I-Mac, the Macintosh, the computers in general... haven't gone anywhere for decades, and now the only reason they get some traction with your average PC user is due to the I-Pod and the I-phone. I'm still in the IBM compatible world, and will be for a long time to come.

So far, nothing to iPologize about.
