Probably most of us know someone who is in between jobs. Unemployment can be very discouraging and sometimes it is very hard to know how best to encourage. My suggestions will not work for everyone. Some of my ideas will work better for your female friends.
Give them a certificate to their favorite hair stylist, or better yet go with them and make it a fun event where you all end up looking fantastic. Getting one's hair done is quite theraputic--it's a wonder I'm not bald:). Or at least give a certificate for a manicure.
Take her shoe shopping on you. There is just something uplifting about a new pair of shoes. (I think Imelda Marcos may have suffered from some kind of depression--hence her large shoe collection.)
Be willing to modify some of your free time activities to be less expensive so your out-of-work friend won't feel embarrassed. Paying for a few things for a friend is fine, but not everything. Think of how you would feel. For instance, sometimes have a barbeque or pizza at home rather than going out so money doesn't enter into it. If you regularly see insert sport team in person, watch a few games on TV instead with your friend unless you are on the team yourself and can get your friends in practically free.
Seriously, ask yourself "Do I know anyone who might be able to benefit from my friend's job skills." Make yourself aware of what your friend can do. Help them think outside the box. Be brave and sensible and tell them about realistic opportunities. You might just help them find a job.
