This is pretty freaky to think about:

I mean I guess I sort of assumed it was always something that could be done (or at least in the works), but man it is nuts to think about any president having that kind of power. Don't like the way things are going? Unhappy with the way things are tilting politically? Whoops! Internet crashed...

Fool on,

Interesting. My in-laws were discussing this. If my husband had been able to make a comment at the time (everybody was just getting upset) he would have said something to the effect that this would be a drastic measure that would make any president unpopular because so much of our business functions with the internet. Probably switching off the internet would be the best way to cause an economic crash and governmental instability. It sounds like a cure that would be worse than any cause.

(Somehow any country that would do this would be about as intelligent as a 3 year old plugging his ears and saying "I can't hear you." This kind of power doesn't belong to a president, but to a dictator.)

I agree...it would put an immediate stop to most business and, if prolonged, would likely lead to violent revolt.  In any case, is it even possible?  The is no central internet "hub" that can be shut down to "switch off the internet"...it's more like a giant network.  Any effort to switch off even a portion of the internet would be immense...not everyone is routed through the same space to get to the same website, etc...  You would need a massive coordinated effort and cooperation from many that would likely be reluctant to cooperate.
