First, a link! If we can see Jesus, the Virgin Mary, or any other earthly deity in things, why can't the Martian little green men see their own? Can you see the big eyed alien as well as I can?

Now, I think Mars is going to play a figurative role in humanity's future. Other people think this too, and some people have been compiling the companies who are trying to make that happen.

- Space Investing

- Lou Dobbs writes: "Space: The Next Business Frontier"

- Edward L. Hudgins writes: "Space: The Free-Market Frontier"

(and a whole whack of other books on this subject are available)

So...I started thinking about all of the *current* companies that are making products that would serve to aid Mars exploration and development. Of course, there's the satellite companies that are up-and-coming like Orbcomm (ORBC) and Globalstar (GSAT). There's the multitude of companies already involved in NASA projects. There's telescope makers. There's alternative energy companies (solar, especially...TMF has already talked about the promising ones quite a lot. There's the discovery and initial-development companies working with algae (both for bio-oil and food production that will be required for colonization). The massive coordination and computing requirements of serious space ventures make it impossible to ignore technical big players like IBM, Sun, Cisco and Oracle. There's so many possibilities here...for humanity and investing. Can you hold your space exploration stocks for the next 50 years? Maybe NASA needs to go truly public and have an IPO :)

(Disclaimer: I own shares in ORBC, though that's not why they are included. They appear to be growing a lot in the M2M communication market, which is exactly what will need to happen on Mars. I don't have shares in any other company listed.)
