The Federal Communications Commision (FCC) selected and approved HD Radio (trademark of iBiquity's in-band on-channel (IBOC) digital radio technology) as the digital audio broadcasting method for the United States in 2002. This technology is used by AM and FM radio stations to transmit (broadcast) content (audio and data) through digital signal and simutaneously with analog signal.
Car audio stereo with HD radio receiver can receive digital signals which is much better than analog signals. With digital you get sound clarity and data (information) like for example by hitting "[TAG]" when favorite song is on radio, information is stored and you'll see ARTIST NAME, SONG TITLE, and FROM WHICH ALBUM by connecting iPod. Also with HD Radio receivers it will receive multiple stations on a single frequency and as many station choices than analog. NOTE: HD RADIO IS THE ONLY TECHNOLOGY IN THE UNITED STATES APPROVED BY THE FCC AS OF THIS DATE!!!
From my understanding if you want
* AM station with FM station sound quality
* FM station with CD sound quality
* song information sent from station
HD Radio receiver will be right for you.
