It Always Begins with a Betrayal

This is the story of your consciousness
It always begins with a betrayal. Decisions were made without your knowledge, without your input. You were not offered a chance to analyze them. In most cases you weren't even born when others made decisions that impacted your life. You can't comprehend their impact if you don't know they happened. They layer on top of each other, one after another for decades. Thick intellectual fog envelopes you - becomes as commonplace and routine as a train that passes your home so often you no longer notice it.
You sense something is wrong with your country but you can't put your finger on it. You cannot articulate it. You accept it because you have no other choice. Still, it stings the back of your mind. It's painful to contemplate and for the sake of your own sanity, you begin to actively suppress it.
The Visionaries
There are people out there who are immune to the intellectual fog. These are The Visionaries. They see right through it. By contrast, your visibility is right in front of your face. Theirs extends for miles as if there is no fog at all. They laugh at the pronouncements of the authorities. They ridicule and mock the experts. They yell "LIARS!" when everyone else is nodding in agreement. Their boldness both enrages and frightens you. "Who do these people think they are," you wonder? "Why do they think they know everything?" More importantly - and secretly - there is jealousy. How is it possible they know something you do not?!
The Visionaries will be betrayed as well - betrayed by the very people they try to help. They will be betrayed because some prefer the fog. It's safe and comfortable. It is a release from personal responsibility - an idea that chokes those who spent a lifetime hooked up to a support system they never fully understood or dared to contemplate. It is much easier to live in ignorance.
Challenged
The Visionaries present you with an uncomfortable choice. On the one hand is your life as it is with its daily routine - the rat race - the cars, houses, and bank accounts. Green bills and plastic cards in your wallet, date nights at the movies, endless shopping malls - consumerism. The mortgage. Caring for the children. Saving the planet. Hybrids. Education. Bumper stickers extolling your child's mastery of standardized testing. Plight of the poor. Parties and cliques. Social status and People Magazine. Made in America. Democracy and charity. Waving the flag. Parades. National Holidays and Three Square Meals a Day. Democrat. Republican. The normal. Life.
In the other hand, the normal gets reduced to a pile of dust and with the slightest breath is blown away into oblivion forever. You can't go back. It's never the same.
This is your first challenge.
