I recently purchased a Nest thermostat despite the fact I live in a 1 bedroom apartment complex with maybe $30 a month in electric costs. The Nest was started by some former Apple engineers, who turned a thermostat from a dumb and dumb looking $30 item into a smart and great looking $250 item. You can control the thermostat from an app on your smartphone, and it figures out your routine to create a heating/cooling schedule for you.
I intiailly thought this might be a great acquisition for Apple. Put their marketing power behind it and make it ubiquitious in all households. Then I thought why stop there?
Why doesn't Apple extend its brand to stand for "smart and beautful"? How many dumb thermostats type products are out there that could use some Apple-ification? Appliances? Cars? Lawn mowers? What would an iLawnMower look like (and do?). This could be a way for it to double and triple some more.
