Lets Have More Contests!

I am a big fan of trying to win prizes so I thought it was worth mentioning there is a stock picking contest that is awarding a modest prize for a brief write up/performance of a stock in your region of North America over the next year. I like how Canada is included in the mix since it is often our forgotten friend to the north. Since I'm in the northeast U.S. I have a pretty good selection of companies to choose from.

I think it would be cool if CAPS did something similar contest-wise at the company level or if they could give us a screen to filter stocks by geographic location, that would be handy too. The local information that people possess can be a valuable tool to discover the undiscovered companies ahead of Wall St.

Back to contests, I know last summer I ran a Haiku stock picking contest that combined the literary and financial acumen of the community here into a single event. I think we had a good time with it.

Maybe we can do something similiar again this winter since its so damn cold out. I've heard rumblings HarryCarysGhost  is volunteering to run another contest. :o) Right Harry? And whats this about a new plasma TV for the winner? Or more realistically maybe it should be called Notaplasmatv contest,

Happy New Year,

-Rally

I would love to be part of a new contest.  Based on past performance, I can even sort of promise that I will end up in the bottom 10%, if not at first, then eventually.  That means that most of you will be assured that someone is lower than whatever score you end up with.  (Yeah, trust me.  I am sure of this one.)

And for what it's worth, I pick my real life stocks carefully and slowly with lots of due diligence...which is nothing like the way I pick stocks for contests.

Way to put me on the spot there Rally ;)

I'll start thinking of a new contest, just need to find the perfect movie to theme it after.

Hey Harry. Thanks for be agreeable to my on the spot proposal :)  Maybe the contest could be named after a funny movie. There are several I enjoy, but finding one that could apply in some way to stocks may be the trick.

Just wondering, but what did everyone else pick?

Personally, I decided to go with Exelon.

I haven't picked yet for that contest but with a one year window, I think my pick has to be as small of a market cap trading above $5 that I can find around here. Hopefully I'll be selected top 3, but either way not a bad contest to open it up to N. America as a whole. I will be curious to see if any Mexicans or Canadians get selected. I guess 65 pesos is the equivalent of $5 bucks U.S. and CAD is close to 1 to 1 exchange so the stock minimum for Toronto exchange is $5 too. Too bad we couldn't get in on this last year, move to Canada and change the rules to go short some natural resource plays!

I'll probably pick GNW again. I think they are the only company I own based in Virginia.

If I lived in Mexico I'd pick the beer maker Grupo Modelo, looks pretty cheap.

Harry, in your next contest, I want TWTR.  Unless of course you theme it after Hunger Games and require that all picks come from the sectors of food, drink, and retail sales.  In that case, I want AMZN.  ;)
