Let us never underestimate the ability of hicks and presidential candidates to see only what they want to see.

In what should someday be regarded as this war's finest example of ignorant hickish utterances, quoth an Indiana Republican, Mike Pence, regarding a market in Baghdad: "like a normal outdoor market in Indiana."

Mike Pence is either a liar or an idiot.

This market has been the site of bombings where dozens were killed, and sniper fire is a constant worry. I dont' know what part of Indiana Pence is from, but even the lousier parts of Indianapolis aren't that bad.

John McCain said the market's operations were proof that the surge was working, but the folks who depend on that market for their livelihood thought differently.

“What are they talking about?” Ali Jassim Faiyad, the owner of an electrical appliances shop in the market, said Monday. “The security procedures were abnormal!”

“They paralyzed the market when they came,” Mr. Faiyad said during an interview in his shop on Monday. “This was only for the media.”

Only for Fox news, maybe, and the few Americans who don't listen to what anyone on the ground in Baghdad says, which is, quite simply, that things suck. And they're not getting better.

How many $$$ billion more will it take? Who pays, and who pockets?
