JakilaTheHun is our balance sheet expert.

He has correctly and smartly focused on the beaten down Bank and REIT (Real Estate Investment Trust) stock issues the last year.  His high CAPS ranking in 2009-2010 is a reflection of his successful approach of investing broadly in these "leading" sectors.

I added some short positions to my portion of the portfolio:

Shorted GLBC to offset my Long FTE (Both telecoms)

Shorted CVGI to offset my long POWL (both industrial materials)

Shorted ESRX to offset my long WLP (both managed care)

Shorted DMC to offset my PRGN (both business services)

Shorted MDZ to offset my NOVA (both Physicians)

Shorted ESS to offset my SPPR (both Reits)

This combined with my non offset longs (AOB, AMED, AIRT) give me an

$18,000 Long and $12,000 short for a 33% net long exposure.

Increasing leverage, and erratic earnings make this a little riskier than I want.

On a side note, I just sold my real money position in VIFL which is up about 60% today (it was my risky play I only owned it for about 1 week) and replaced it with an equally risky CAW.

TMFJake, it is obvious to me that your first name is not "Jake" from the times I've e-mailed you.  Why are you TMFJake and not TMFJohn?

Nice performance day for WSS player "hedgefundpractice!"  Up 1% during a flat market day...UltraLong hit a homerun with a short sell for most of the gain, but many other positions went the right direction!!!

@bigcat1969:  And excellent question.  :)  I doubt that the TigerPack Fund team will be as skillful in their use of leverage as the LTMM team.  :)

I forgot to mention one other tidbit last night on the chat...

Some of the stocks in "hedgefundpractice" are also selections in TigerPackFund on CAPS...

There is a loose correlation between the total point line on the CAPS chart and how the positions are performing in the Wall Street Survivor account.  Since March 8th, TigerPackFund on CAPS has fallen in points from a low-900 to a low-800 number.

We have a considerably higher WSS "short" position (betting stocks to decline in price) than in TigerPackFund, so the slight "outperformance" of the stocks involved (after you back out the start-up transaction costs and the low net market expsoure) is actually a good thing, from my perspective.  Basically, the 180+ stock choices in WSS have done a little better than the 50 or so stocks in the TigerPackFund sister creation since March 8th, 2010.
