Losing your job: curse or opportunity?

Going back to school to "brush up" on my job skills or get new ones wouldn't be foremost in my mind if I lost my job. Taking a deep breath and using the opportunity to pursue a dream job or start my own business ... yeahhh, rrright. I think I'd go into OMG-I-can't-be-without-income mode fairly quickly and send out resumes to any job I looked even sorta qualifed for. I'm single, so I'm supporting myself.

Being without a job was very bad in the household I grew up in -- for financial reasons and, I think, some anti-laziness doctrine. The only upside to my mom being laid off -- in my opinion -- was having her home more.

This is why it makes me uneasy when people call for letting/making weak businesses go under. I know there are reasons to want this, but people will lose their jobs. And that's very bad for individuals.

The truth is that if a company goes under, it was meant to go under. You're right! if you lose your job now, take any job that you can get, but when the job market gets better, try to find a growing company that won't go under.
