Popping the Oil Bubble (Part 4) Exxon is selling their Service Stations. I would guess for a very good reason.

FYI -  Mercedes to Cut Petroleum Out of Lineup by 2015

"In less than 7 years, Mercedes-Benz plans to ditch petroleum-powered vehicles from its lineup. Focusing on electric, fuel cell, and biofuels, the company is revving up research in alternative fuel sources and efficiency.

The German car company has a few new powertrains in the line-up that European journalists have had the opportunity to test out in their facility in Spain. One vehicle includes the F700, powered by a DiesOtto engine that combines HCCI and spark ignition to get nearly the same efficiency as diesel, but minus the expensive after-treatment systems. The engine can run on biofuels, and we may have a purchasable vehicle by 2010 – a year that seems to be popular for the debut of a lot of new alternative fuel car models, making ’08 and ’09 simply thumb-twiddling years for consumers. I don’t know, maybe car makers just like the roundness of “2010.” The company’s next big step will be to launch a Smart electric car which is fuel and emission-free."

Dieter Zetsche Confirms Electric Mercedes in 2010 - We were right!!

"We usually don’t like to brag here at BenzInsider, but this time we just can’t resist. If you’ve been following our news over the last couple of months, you might remember our story from March 17th about the 100% electric car from Mercedes. That is right ladies and gentleman, we posted a rumor story on a Mercedes plan to enter the market for all-electric powered vehicles, after receiving an email from someone within Mercedes. Our story wasn’t really covered too much, which as you can see now is unfortunate. The all electric “rumor” that we reported on, is the real deal, unfortunately, nobody in the automotive blog world will ever give us credit for being the first to expose this story.

Daimler plans to roll out a Mercedes-Benz model that runs on electricity in 2010, its chief executive said in an interview with the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung.

“We plan an electric Smart for 2010 and for the same year a Mercedes (electric) model as well,”

FYI -Low Cost Gas Engine Innovation Doubles Fuel Economy

"Revetec, a little known company from the Gold Coast region of Australia, may be on to something huge: they’ve created an engine that is 50% smaller, 50% lighter, has 50% lower emissions and is cheaper to manufacture than a conventional internal combustion engine of the same horsepower. Oh yeah, did I mention that it doubles the fuel economy too.

What that means is a car like the 2007 Toyota Yaris, which is rated at 40 mpg on the highway, would get 80 mpg with a Revetec engine.

This isn’t some hoax… They have a prototype which has been attached to an actual vehicle and independently tested to substantiate their claims."

Colonel,

I think we are going to have some pretty good options here in the future.

Yes and yet diesel is made from oil and so are IV bags milk containers fences remote controls computers hair dryers and a whole host of things they will dream up. Didn't Brazil just have a new find? How about just the children in India not the parents can replace every man woman and child in America? What about the Children of Russia,China,Latin America, Mexico and other countries? The population of the world now stands at
World Population Trends The page entitled "Total Midyear Population for the World: 1950-2050" presents the latest estimates and projections of world population from the U.S. Census Bureau. These figures are also presented in the figure at left. The world population increased from 3 billion in 1959 to 6 billion by 1999, a doubling that occurred over 40 years. The Census Bureau's latest projections imply that population growth will continue into the 21st century, although more slowly. The world population is projected to grow from 6 billion in 1999 to 9 billion by 2040, an increase of 50 percent is expected to require 41 years. There is conflicting information out there but with the current population growth then I don't see a bubble in oil. It looks to me flat from here or up depending on polticts creation of wealth in other countries. They will buy more.

GreenMycon has a pretty good blog series going about oil and energy in general that hopefully he'll continue.  Anyway he brings up strong points in that gasoline is just one of the things we use oil for and that even if we switch all our cars to electrics and fuel cell vehicles it won't totally end America's oil dependence, since we depend on hydrocarbons for so much more than just gas.

I do like the trend that car companies are finally taking toward making more fuel effecient vehicles and even gas free vehicles.  Honda has really impressed me in this area.

As far as exxon selling service stations, it reminded me a lot of a Jim Jubak article where he talks about Exxon slowly fading away over the next 15 years or so.  Their execs seem to have a very firm profit margin in their head and the high cost of starting up newer production in harder to reach and often riskier places doesn't seem to interest them too much.

Germany does it again!!!

This is simply Shamwow!!!... Also, I'm not surprised for German auto-manufacturers to maintain their leadership ahead of the United States in engineering, development and implementing alternative energy solutions. However, it does seem domestic auto-manufacturers are shifting in the same direction. The Chevy Volt for GM is very promising. I don't know the last time GM has ever had higher expectations and placed their hopes for their future on a lineup of vehicles that don't exist.

Given that today's oil futures are trading in contango(above spot prices) I think you'd have to be insane to buy a forward contract as prices approach $175

tmer11,

Good to hear from you. Battery technology, solar, etc are the better answer. Hydrogen is not likely the right answer.

Thanks, and oh wow you have another video with David Rockerfeller. Amazing? Really, I'm wondering what is with the overdramatic Ron Paul theme music?!?! I bet if they just played hours of background theme music on C-SPAN it'd be more watchable.

That Technoviking tape is awesome. By the way I think that's from an X-Rated Festival in Germany... I bet you they could've used plenty of Shamwows afterwards. And yes I actually bought some shamwows for someone else
