Why should we trust the fed's figures?  The answers is we shouldn't. If you are earning  30.00 or less adjusted for inflation from the 70's you are in a Depression. If you are earning 31.00 to 61.00 hr. you are just above the poverty level. The middle class needs to earn 1,2000.00 hr. to stay middle class.Need I say more.  Pay cash. Do NOT BUY ON CREDIT. DO NOT TAKE OUT LOANS> JUST PAY CASH> LISTEN TO SUSIE ORMAN. PAY CASH.

$1200/hr * 40 hr/week * 52 weeks/year = $2,496,000 /year

I'm pretty sure my parents in the 1970s weren't living like millionaires.  Right now they're making less than the 30/hr and still saving plenty.  They were never in a minimum wage job.  It's all in how you decide to live your life.

I do agree with you about avoiding the evil credit.  Live simply, you'll be happy.

Perhaps picking the time when wages were an all time high relative to costs isn't reasonable, but no question wages haven't come close to keeping up or being reasonable.

When I was about 19 I was making about $7/hour and I drove a Datsun 1000.  It cost me about $7-8 to fill the tank.  Today it costs me $50-60 to fill my tank.  I have 8 years of university and a whole world more experience yet I could buy enough gas to drive a week for about an hour's worth of work in the early 80s with practically no work experience. So, the tank was smaller.  I worked in a bank and minimum wage was $5/hour.

I suspect entry level bank workers have to work about 3-4 hours to fill their gas tank these days.

$31 an hour times 40 hours/week times 52 weeks a year is $64,480. Someone making $63k a year is hardly living in poverty.  Where did $31 an hour come from?

Why pay cash you ask. So you don't have to pay your hard erned money to the banker. Buy a car pay cash. Buy a house pay cash. buy a starbucks coffee and pay cash. Don't give you banker your hard erned money you keep it.

And that My Dear Aba is the reason that the world poor are Sereaming for some justice. Our min. wage is now just like a person earing 3.00 a day in the other countrys. The poor will rebell and there will be more crime and houses in repo set on fire and more wars because they need to live. Compare us to Dubi and Brizill and china and we are no longer the largest eccomony. Just the Facts. That is the way life is right now.

I do this ratio thing with students all the time about how in 1980 I had a job that paid $7/hour (minimum wage was $3.65/hour), and tuition was $18/credit hour and now it is $151/credit hour.

Students are always quite surprised at the wage they work out.

Did you know that  the lowest paid CEO makes about 6,152.00 an hour?  So yes that is  how I look at it. With gas going to $4.00  a gal. Min,. wage needs to rise to 35.00 an hour.

$31 per hour minimum wage?  You are kidding right?

That is totally preposterous... average ANNUAL wage is $1000-2000.

Pick your country, they can make cars, shirts, shoes, computers etc... almost anywhere in Asia or Africa and pay people $1200 per month working 12 hours a day, six days a week....
