While getting ready for work this morning, I heard a news story about Procter and Gamble (PG) opening a new on-line store for its products. In an effort to procrastinate this afternoon, I decided to check it out.
The site is located at www.pgestore.com. The site is easy to navigate and the prices look cheap. I did a little quick comparison shopping and compared the P&G direct prices to the prices for similar products on CVS.com and Costco.com. The P&G eStore prices appear to be significantly cheaper. Not only are the base prices cheap, but you can use manufacturers' coupons on some items simply by clicking on a check box.
Plus, they will ship as much stuff as you want, including huge packs of paper towels, toilet paper, jugs of laundry detergent, etc... directly to your house for a flat rate of five bucks. I haven't finalized my order yet, but it does not appear as though they charge sales tax on orders either.
As if this wasn't good enough, when I buy stuff at Costco I have to either use an Costco Amex (which I don't have) or write them a check. At the P&G store I can use my normal credit card and get 2% back on my entire purchase.
The site looks pretty cool. I wonder if it will catch on enough to actually move the revenue or profit needle on a behemoth like P&G. I wouldn't think so, but who knows. One thing is for sure, if I was a major retailer of Procter & Gamble's products I would be pretty annoyed about the endeavor.
Check it out and let me know what you think. It looks like my fellow Fools could save themselves a few bucks by using the site.
