Earlier this month Forsyth Medical Center, which like Brunswick Community is owned by Novant Health, laid off 48 people — the Winston-Salem hospital’s first widespread layoffs in 10 years, the Winston-Salem Journal reported.
Earlier this year, Southeastern Regional Medical Center announced a plan to cut as many as 112 jobs.
Officials at the Lumberton hospital pointed fewer patients, decreased revenue and increased expenses for the decision, according to The Robesonian.
Nationally, one of the largest layoffs this year occurred in Pittsburgh where 1,500 employees at one facility lost their jobs and the emergency room was closed. Two acute-care hospitals in New York City have closed this year, filing for bankruptcy and shedding 2,000 jobs.
