Zimbabwe Inflation Hits Record High
Updated:16:36, Wednesday April 16, 2008
Inflation in Zimbabwe has hit an all-time high of almost 165,000%. Inflation soaring in Zimbabwe
The rate of inflation soared to 164,900.3% in February, according to a report by the Central Statisical Office in the country.
The figure represented an increase of 64,320.1 percentage points from the previous month.
Official inflation rates have become increasingly difficult to access in recent months but the AFP news agency said it had obtained the latest figures.
The CSO last released monthly inflation statistics in September.
The November figure was only released by the central bank in a statement.
The latest increase comes amid tension as the country awaits results from presidential elections held nearly three weeks ago.
Opposition leader Morgan Tsvangirai claims he beat 84-year-old President Robert Mugabe and alleges that is why electoral authorities have not yet released the results.
But Mugabe's ruling party says neither man won a clear victory and insists a run-off will be necessary.
