My Libertarian Moment.

It's done. I voted with my dollar. I opened a new bank account with a credit union. Less than one hundred branches.

I will spend down what is left of my citibank account and close it.

Did the wave of lost business from treating customers badly drive C under yet? Did the anger of Americans at tax cheating UBS drive them out yet?

Oh well. I had the moment.

In my entire life (now pushing 40) I have never had a bank account.  I have accounts at three credit unions, but never at a bank.  I never understood why someone would open a bank account when they charge outrageous fees and treat their cutomers like crap.

Credit unions generally have minor or no fees (I don't pay a fee on any of my accounts), and they will actually talk to you and listen if you apply for a loan.

Good for you for switching.  If only the rest of the country would wake up.

Good idea!  I'm looking to switch away from Chase, myself, but I live in Manhattan and I haven't found too many local banks (Chase IS our local bank :/)

Go ahead and just transfer the money out of C now... otherwise I'll bet you they charge you some balance too low fee on your way out the door...

Cheers!  I have a Credit Union too, but still using a big name as well.  It might be time to switch completely.

It is your money, you should move it to the place that suits you the best. Citibank is not a company I admire, so there are many better places to have your funds.

well done! been a credit union member for over a decade with one horribly mistaken foray into a B of A checking account.

Congrats!!! Good move.

Anyone looking for an interesting alternative, you may want to check out Everbank.  They offer FDIC-insured (as if that means anything...) foreign currency accounts and CDs.
