Netflix in Europe
As a 24 year old adult male and avid movie fan, I've had a front row seat to the shifting consumer-side of the movie industry. I remember walking up an down the aisles of the local blockbuster, glancing at every box cover to decide which movie we'd rent. I remember the blockbuster closing and heading to the redbox - boy was that change! I also remember getting netflix access on all the TV's in the house!
These days I'm an American expat living in Budapest, Hungary and unfortunately, Netflix hasn't made it out to this part of the world yet. I've seen Netflix open up service in parts of Western-Europe but, when they do so, they only release limited libraries of content due to copyright and licensing arrangements with the movie studios.
To put things more simply, if you're logging into Netflix from an account in the UK, you're not going to have access to the same titles as someone who is accessing netflix from the USA. The same goes for people residing in Canada. Due to the geo-targeted IP address, they're only goigng to be able to view the Canadian Netflix library which has significantly less titles (about 10,000 fewer) compared to the USA netflix library.
Now, after living in Eastern Europe for about 2 years, I've noticed a lot of people out here using VPN technology. A VPN stands for Virtual Private Network and it's a safe and secure way to browse the internet / change your IP address while browsing the world wide web. What's most interesting is that I've been able to watch Netflix in Europe while using a VPN. This is a pretty big deal for someone located abroad!
I'm not going to jump to conclusions but their certainly does widen the size of the total annual addressable market that Netflix can capture. Another observation, a UK netflix account could easily access the US netflix library by taking a trip to the US. But to save the cost of the 800 dollar plane ticket, you could simply use VPN Software to change you IP address. Shocking, right?
Anyone, I hope you found this useful. Leave a comment and I'd be happy to answer your questions.
