Nike Golf More than Tiger

Interesting article from Bloomberg this morning about sales of golf gear staying strong even though sales of Tiger gear are whimpering rather than roaring. An analyst quoted says that Nike golf sales are still robust even though Tiger sales are less than stellar. That tells us something about the Nike brand and the company's ability to be more than just one all-star. It's smart for Nike to stand by him. At some point Tiger will square his shoulders and get things moving in the right direction (on top of news this morning that his divorce is going through). And then he'll start winning again and selling his Tiger gear. That will be good news for Nike, the company/stock, which is an active recommendation in our Stock Advisor service.

Nike clubs aren't really "professional" level equipment but they sell like hotcakes at places like Sports Athority who has them priced right above lower end products from named golf companies such as Calloway. Their balls are attractive, but rather expensive. I've used them but i'm not sure they have enough feel/distance to play them over something proven like Titelist.

Hi Gemini, I agree on the clubs. I once hit a driver and it sounded totally hollow. Nike clubs took a reputational beating a few years ago when Lefty mentioned that Tiger was using "inferior" equipment when he switched to Nike from Titliest. I'm sure they are much better now but I don't think I'll switch. Most of the article I referenced from Bloomberg was on golf apparel, which obviously Nike stamps a bunch with Tiger's logo. But even then its golf stuff seems to be selling well, Tiger or not.

Thanks,

Andy
