Obama appoints new telecom executives to cybersecurity committee

On May 26th, President Obama announced made five new appointments to the President’s National Security Telecommunications Advisory Committee (NSTAC).

President’s National Security Telecommunications Advisory Committee. The National Security Telecommunications Advisory Committee are made up of industry chief executives from major telecommunications companies, network service providers, information technology, finance, and aerospace companies. These industry leaders provide the President with collaborative advice and expertise, as well as robust reviews and recommendations. The NSTAC’s goal is to develop recommendations to the President to assure vital telecommunications links through any event or crisis, and to help the U.S. Government maintain a reliable, secure, and resilient national communications posture.

The five new members are

Scott Charney, Corporate Vice President of Microsoft's Trustworthy Computing (TwC) Group.

Dick Costolo, CEO and former COO of Twitter, Inc.

David G. DeWalt, President of McAfee

Jamie Dos Santos, President and CEO of Terremark Federal Group.

Lisa Hook, President and CEO of Neustar, Inc.

 

These five new members will join the existing NSTAC members:

 

James Q. Crowe, Chief Executive Officer of Level 3 Communications.

Maggie Wilderotter, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Frontier Communications.

Matthew J. Desch, Chief Executive Officer of Twitter, Inc.

Joseph E. Fergus, Founder and Chief Executive Officer of Communications Technologies, Inc.

Linda Gooden, Executive Vice President of Information Systems & Global Solutions at Lockheed Martin.VZ

Mark Greenquist, President and CEO of Telcordia Technologies.

Larissa L. Herda, Chairman, CEO and President of tw telecom inc.

Dan Hesse, Chief Executive Officer of Sprint Nextel.

Kevin R. Johnson, Chief Executive Officer of Juniper Networks.

Clayton M. Jones , Chairman, President, and CEO of Rockwell Collins, Inc.

Kevin Kennedy, President and CEO of Avaya.

Howard L. Lance, Chairman, President, and CEO of Harris Corporation.

Mike W. Laphen, Chairman, President and Chief Executive Officer of CSC, Inc.

Tom Lynch, Chief Executive Officer of TE Connectivity.

Mark McLaughlin, President and Chief Executive Officer of VeriSign.

Edward A. Mueller, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Qwest.

Paul Sagan, Chief Executive Officer of Akamai.

Ivan G. Seidenberg, Chairman and CEO of Verizon.

Kay Sears, President of Intelsat General.

Gary Smith, Chief Executive Officer of Ciena.

John T. Stankey, President and Chief Executive Officer of AT&T Operations.

What an enormous mess.

If we let the internet go unchecked, it seems as if hackers can hit any database they would like. If we want more information security, we will involve the US government and it's numerous redundant committees.
