October 2013 Selections active

October 16, 2013 – Comments (1)

October 16, 2013

Every two months we* generate a list of the top 30 stocks that have at least a $100 million market capitalization. We use Joel Greenblatt's MFI site at to generate the list.

Resulting tickers are copied into to randomly rank the companies from 1-30 and select the first 5 stocks.

If a stock already appears on TrackJGreenblatt CAPS page or is unavailable as a CAPS pick, the next stock on the list will be chosen.

The resulting selection of 5 stocks is entered into Joel Greenblatt's CAPS page.

Stocks will be held for one year then sold.

I am from Argentina so excuse me if my english is not so good.   I have two important questions about the Magic Formula.  1) I know that statistics rules in practically everywhere, but I don't understand some MF selections.

For example, now (29/10/2013), one of the Greenblatt stock is Cornerstone Therapeutics Inc. (CRTX). Then, the MF features: P/E 135 / ROA 0,6%.
It is right now in the list (50 million capital market / 30 best stocks).  What is wrong here? The selection or my interpretation? I hope a I AM WRONG ON THIS, because I love this quantitative way of making money.

2) My last question is about the frequency. Please correct me if I am making a not well selection.  Six times a year (For example, January, March, May, July, September, November). In this dates I buy 5 stocks (that appears in the MF web site).  These groups of 5 stocks are conserved -happen whay happen- in mi porfolio for one year (I know the specific way of selling the winners and losers).  Is this the selection way of the MF?

Thank you for your time. I am expecting to have an interesting answer for my intrigues. I will be very gratefull to you.  Regards.
