So, CNN is blaring this headline

CIA Director David Petraeus Submits Resignation Over Extra Marital Affair

Now, first let me say, my own socio-political viewpoint would have me rejoicing if the entire CIA were to resign. I tend to believe that they do more to harm our national security than to help it.

BUT, why would an extra marital affair be grounds to give up your job as CIA director? Isn't the whole point of that organization to be sneaky? What is an extra marital affair but a civilian version of spy games? Why on earth would monogamous fidelity be a pre-requisite for Chief Spy? And, what if this affair was really part of his spying duties? You know, maybe he was seducing the wife of Syrian dictator Bashar Al-Assad in order to find out where the dude is hiding. Or maybe he was getting cozy with Angela Merkel in order to take down the German socialist economy so that Americans don't see an example of success outside the U.S. borders.

Man, how is it that the Puritans are still affecting our society this much after 400 years?

Well, he got caught.  The point of spying is to be sneaky and get away with it, so he's obviously unqualified.

 On a more serious note, when it comes to matters of security, the main concern is typically that if someone finds out, they can hold it over your head and blackmail you into releasing confidential information, etc.  Presumably, if the guy had just announced he was a swinger and that he and his wife agreed to have an open marriage, he might have been able to get away with this.

Maybe he's thinking about running for President in 2016 and wanted to kill two birds with one stone.  1) Get this skeleton out of his closet and 2) Step down from his day job so he can start fundraising.

But the Soviet Union still fell.

The CIA used this tactic too. Funny how the seduction tactic still works after thousands of years of history showing that it so frequently serves as the downfall of the powerful. We really are just slaves to our biological impulses like all other animals, aren't we?
