Once Upon A Time 25 Years Ago In 1989...

I drive to work at 5:30am daily and at different times on the radio I heard Scorpions: Wind of Change, Jeff Healey Band: While My Guitar Gently Weeps (originally performed by The Beatles), and Pink Floyd: Hey You. These songs are very powerful, so after work as I got home I surfed the internet for the music videos and was brought back to 1989 world events.

So below is a list of events (from thepeoplehistory . com) in 1989 (25 years ago) that will make 25th anniversary news or possibly headlines for 2014 imho (in my humble opinion).

1) Pro Democracy protest in China 

• Pro democracy protesters clash with Chinese Security Forces 

• Thousands of Students occupy Tiananmen Square in Beijing China protesting for democracy , Chinese Government Declares martial law and Hundreds of Demonstrators are killed 

• US and other countries around the world place sanctions on China 

2) Fall of Berlin Wall 

• Massive protests and either side of the Berlin Wall bring about the collapse of the East German Government and the Berlin Wall is breached and eventually dismantled and The Brandenburg Gate opened

• After 30 years the Cold War between East and West ends following the Malta conference and the Berlin Wall comes down  

3) Wars and conflicts

• USSR pulls out of Afghanistan

• PLO and Israel begin preliminary talks

• In South Africa violence in black townships worsen with over 2,500 killed 

• New Prime Minister in South Africa F.W. de Klerk starts to dismantle apartheid

• After 30 years the Cold War between East and West ends following the Malta conference

• Civil War in Lebanon increases between Christian and Islamic Fundamentalists  

4) Free Elections

• Free Elections in Poland bring Solidarity to power 

• Free elections in Czechoslovakia 

• Partial elections in USSR  

5) US Savings and Loans Crisis

• The Savings and Loan Crisis leads to nearly 1/4 of all savings and loan associations requiring bailout dur to poor real estate lending practices and an easing of regulatory oversight

• The US Government provides a $150 billion bail out for hundreds of saving and loan associations     

6) Japan's Economy

• Tokyo Stock Market Crash ends Japan's long period of high Economic Growth

7) Automotive Manufacturers

• Toyota launches it's luxury brand the Lexus

• Yugo Cars go bankrupt

• Ford buys Jaguar  

8) Enviroment

It is so very hard to believe that it has only been 25 years since some of these things happened.  And yes, I do remember almost all of it (including what I was doing during the inauguration)
