Only One for High-Ku

October 17, 2013 – Comments (10) | RELATED TICKERS: NNBR

The S&P 500 reached new high territory today.  Several of the stocks in my portfolio are knocking on the door of the 52-week high party, but only one made in to bright lights and music.

Little NN, Inc. (NNBR), a small bearings and precision parts company, got it's invite with a new high of $16.49.  This company has a special place in my heart since it's my first and only ten-bagger.  Without further adieu, here's the haiku.

Precision Bearings,
A small cap industrial,
Just rolling along.

It's a little concerning to see only one stock in my collection of about 20 hit a high with the market.  That either means I've got a portfolio that's got some diversification or stock selection problems or that this is a pretty narrow high driven by a few of the bigger names in the index.  I think the latter is more likely and from some of what I've read or heard from talking heads, a narrow advance isn't typically sustainable.

Fool on!  Russ

What do you think, are things getting expensive and toppy or is the market headed higher?  'course, the two aren't mutually exclusive.

Had the "Old Man River" tune in my head after reading that heheh.

I have to say I really like my portfolio now. I still see plenty of opportunities out there but not like the days of March 2009. This market is by no means way over valued.  It is fairly valued which means it has more room to grow.  2 steps forward 1 step back is the type of market I like.

As long as Washington stops with these annual brinksmanship games and starts to sit down and help Uncle Ben (Aunt Janet) in earnest from the fiscal side I consider this a secular bull market with many years to go.

Just like your Hai-ku, hopefully the stock market just keeps on rolling along.

Hey Russ, I got one for today-

SIRI-$3.99

Visa was close but off the high by three beans.

Onto the haiku-

Hey now! babooey!

Transmissions from the sky

Siri Delivers the Stern.

(note this whole haiku is based on the notion that "transmissions" is four syllables)

The way I see it, Mr. Market will indeed proceed higher, with some buying opportunities thrown in.

Cheers.

I used to own siri years ago.  Always liked it but hated that there were so many shares outstanding (over 6 billion with a B).  They need to do a reverse stock split in my opinion so larger institutions can buy it.

I think both your statements are right - expensive and toppy and headed higher.  I see the S+P hitting 1920 in not too long; if it does I am bailing out.

Thanks for all the comments.

Some of the ones that were almost there yesterday broke through today. Haven't done haiku yet, might make a Fool article out of it. Six new highs today: RPM, BDX, GE, GHM, NNBR (again) and TAL.

So much for a narrow advance.

There was chatter about Siri doing a reverse back @ a buck, I for one am glad that they didn't listen.

Just give it some more time and it will be above $5, so institutions are free to go wily nily.

(Says the man who bought his shares at .12 and wishes he had backed up the truck, but feared bankruptcy at the time).

A reverse split won't hurt you here but will help.  6 billion outstanding shares is too much.  And believe me I have plenty of 2009 woulda shoulda coulda plays heheh.

I am hoping you are listening to me with respect to AINV and BBEP. Buy the suckers already and sit on their yields.  It isn't easy making winning picks now ya know.

Oh and Cardinals winning 2-0;p Puig so blew it by not throwing to the ball to the cutoff man. Hope I didn't just jinx the Cards ;(

Wow someone needs to tell Puig to learn to throw the ball to the cut off man.  Cards 4-0.
