Peak Consumption.....?

I have been working and reading about a new area of focus for the Institute of Alstrynomics.....

It is the understanding of exactly how much of the World's resources can man actually consume at one time before such consumption actually harms humanity......in stock market terms.....can growth be bad?

For example, the more we consume, the more we waste.....plactic, packaging, carbon fuel, rare earth metals..........etc.....

Is there a point where man is consuming so much....that actual harm is the net result?

An even more interesting question is the quest for ever rising growth and consumption lead us the certain war between men as we fight to obtain resources necessary for consumption.  In other words, must compound growth lead to war?

Once you learn about the physics of compound growth....you realize such growth cannot continue indefinitely.....there must be an event to stop such growth because quantity eventually runs out.

The event could be war, economic collapse, famine......but the event must occur as there is simply a limit to the resources available for growth.

I think I am uniquely qualified to start focusing on this issue....I have been on both sides of the table and am trained to focus on the facts absent emotion.  So are the members of the Institute of Alstrynomics.  In the past, I have owned a Hummer, a very large engine German vehicle, purchased lots of plastic for my children, and in the process consumed a lot......now my values are changing and I am becoming aware and concerned about a very serious issue facing humanity right now....

As Americans, we have only been trained to want bigger and "better."  We are conditioned on TV, in the movies, and what we see all around us......the question now is whether BIGGER and MORE is really better?

It appears we are about to find out as we are consuming 40% fewer vehicles today than we did just a few years ago.....80% fewer new homes.......flying fewer planes with bigger loads.....etc........

There are 1.5 billion Chinese and Indians that want to consume now.....there are only so many rare earth minerals, so much oil, and limited ocean to dump waste into.....when two people want the same resource.....and money is no longer the issue.....the most likely outcome, absent change in disposition, is fight.

Interesting conclusion if you think about it....compound growth essentially leads to war absent a change in disposition for consumption.
