I disagree with him on sick leave. At my company we have pretty much unlimited sick leave, up to 3 months ot something, but I don't know anybody who absuses it.
Pretty much everyone I've known who's in a work situation where they get a certain number of sick days with pay but lose them if they don't use them make sure they use each and every one of them.
I definitely agree with Schiff that it's not the government's job to dictate those rules. If a company wants to do that as a policy with their own money, that's fine by me.
Dakota, you are in Canada, though, right? I imagine you have more "job security" in Canada? When I was at HP, some people did abuse the sick days somewhat, taking may be 2-3 extra a year when they are not sick. Well, those were the first laid off in 2004. The truth is everybody knows that if you are not sick one day, then you take a sick day and then you show up the next day perfectly well, everybody knows what it is about. Managers are not dumb.
