Positive Returns and Social Dividends

November 01, 2010 – Comments (4) | RELATED TICKERS: TBL.DL

Hey Fools!

You may have noticed the launch of the Rising Stars portfolios, free on I am one of the 16 Fools participating in this; anybody who has followed my articles over the years may have noticed I have a long-time interest in socially responsible investing, or SRI. There are certain stocks I wouldn't really consider due to my own principles. I'm a huge fan of stocks of companies that take all stakeholders into consideration and do well by doing good, and I consider that good, solid capitalism, the kind of vision built into some companies' missions that gets me excited about investing and what a positive force it can be in this world.

That was a long way of saying my portfolio is going to focus on SRI. Here is my launch article, expanding on the philosophy I'm going for here, and here is my first buy recommendation, Timberland. I'm hoping some Fools will follow along with me, but given the 16 participants I'd say that if my focus isn't what you're looking for, there's probably something for everybody. This should be a fun and Foolish initiative!

Fool on!

Alice, you know that when you speak, I listen.  It is a good idea (and it usually makes money as well as sense)   ;)

I enjoyed Stock Picks for Chicks.  MF needs to make that a regular feature.

What do you think of Female Health Company, FHCO?  That is my socially responsible stock pick.  The company seems genuinely interested in helping the world's fight against Aids, and in creating value for their investors, including a dividend which they seem to be regularly paying.  And though there is criticism as to whether their one product, the female condom, will catch on, there is huge room for growth if they can tap into even a small part of the market.  Heck, they've barely started selling it in stores.

I have Ultralong to thank for that one, and as it's up 25 percent from when I bought it, I definitely feel good about having it in my portfolio so far.
