Positve Sign for Netflix from Europe
First off, let me say that I don't own Netflix stock and I'm still not ready to buy because I think it's a bit pricey. But I can say that I am an expatriate USA citizen living in Europe and I was able to open a Netflix account a few months ago. They undercut the price of Amazon-owned LoveFilm so I made the switch. The first few months were fine, but nothing more than I expected from Netflix. That all changed when Netflix's original series House of Cards debuted and I was able to watch it from my account at the same time as people in America.
A small backstory to this: publishing companies don't seem to understand their business at all. When an American production company makes a show, they show it immediately in America and then later at some seemingly random time or not at all in the rest of the world. If they decide not to bring a certain show to the country you are living in, then you have no chance to see it legally, regardless of how much you are willing to pay to see it. The thing these companies don't understand is that people in Europe have also heard of the internet. The internet allows people to illegally download TV shows from around the world practically as soon as they air, watch them for free and have almost no risk of ever being punished for it. Much like music publishers cling to the CD, television publishers cling to selling rights to broadcasters. The whole purpose of all of this is to prevent honest people from viewing the shows that are not licensed in their particular country and encouraging others to download them illegally. Netflix, on the other hand, seems to understand this and debuted their original program around the world at the same time. And for that I say well done, Netflix! I can't wait until the new Arrested Development episodes start and you can be sure that I will be a happy customer when I don't have to spend time figuring out when and if your original series will premiere in Denmark.
Again, I don't own shares of NFLX, but this makes me more likely to invest in them instead of just being a customer.
