"SourceForge.net Update:2008 [sic]-01-06 Edition"
1. December Project of the Month: OrangeHRM - Human Resource Management
2. January Project of the Month: TinyMCE
3. Open Position with our Network Operations Team
Hello, and welcome to the special new year's edition of our monthly
There were a lot of changes on SourceForge.net last year. The most
noticeable was, naturally, our redesigned user interface. That's just the
tip of the iceberg, though, and I'd like to take this opportunity to tell
you about some other new services you may not have noticed.
Project administrators were given a new file upload mechanism, which was
redesigned for greater efficiency and security, and we launched a
completely rethought interactive shell service. Admins and users alike
might also notice our revamped Tracker, which was given a brand new look
We also introduced Hosted Apps, a service that allows projects to spin up
virtualized, hosted open source applications rapidly. Currently, we are
offering phpBB, Gallery, dotProject, Mediawiki, MantisBT, Limesurvey, and a
URL shortening service, and there will be many more applications to come in
2009. Over a thousand projects have opted-in to use this service since our
launch, and you should give it a try if you haven't already!
We vastly expanded our mirror and content distribution networks. In the
month of September, our mirrors served a record-breaking petabyte of
downloads...only to serve just as much data again in October and November.
Also, in November, our web site was visited by more than 30 million unique
users for the first time ever. [Emphasis added]
In short, it was a very productive year for us. Probably our year's
biggest accomplishment, though, was completing the migration to our new
datacenter. Without that, last year's new services could not have been
On the non-tech side, we hosted our third annual Community Choice Awards,
and, for the first time ever, projects not hosted at SourceForge were
eligible to win. The announcement party during OSCON was attended by over
400 people, and we gave away over 16 hours of geek-related tattoos on the
spot. Yeah, real ones.
Finally, we have a request: we want to tell your story! We're looking for
interesting projects and new community developments to write about on our
Community Blog. Tell us about your work by emailing spreadtheword at
sourceforge.net and, if we think it's interesting too, we'll write it up.
The SourceForge.net staff wishes you an enjoyable and prosperous new year!
Thanks for reading, and thanks for your support.

When the SF.net team sends out a site-wide email, we sometimes see
replies that look like this: "Hey! I didn't ask to be on this list! You
spammer. I hate you! I hate your dog! (insert other colorful phrases
here)." The truth is, when you registered on SourceForge.net there was a
check box that said "Receive Site-wide updates, low volume." You left it
checked when you submitted the registration form, hence you are
receiving this email. We send these updates every 4 to 6 weeks, so it
truly is low volume. However if you want off, this is not a problem.
