Real Men Own Homes

June 21, 2010 – Comments (5)

Tough break for Mike Zhang here:

Mike Zhang considered himself serious boyfriend material. He knew what to order at an Italian restaurant. He could mix a tasty margarita. And he always volunteered to carry his girlfriend's handbag.

Then came the deal breaker. Zhang, a 28-year-old language tutor and interpreter, couldn't afford an apartment in the capital's scorching property market.

Rather than waste any more time, his girlfriend of more than two years dumped him.

Read more of the heartbreak created by China's surging property market in the LA Times. The article brings up an interesting question: Are Chinese more materialistic than others, or just more transparent about it?

What's the question here?

Women are materialistic in that they think about their security in the future.

I'm surprised that article doesn't mention the worsening gender ratio in China, which is resulting in an increasing shortage of women.  I've seen estimates that in the current adult generation there's something like 25-35M males who won't be able to find a mate because there's too few women.  The ratio is apparently worsening for the reproductive age population, as it does obviously women can afford to be more picky and men will be forced to show that they're hot $hit.

That's pretty depressing story.

"Real men own homes" could also be a good sales campaign for the NAR.

I agree with pdtbiotech

I think chinese women can afford to be that materialistic if they choose to be. They do have the luxury of choice given the ratio. And I'm sure that chinese women also get a lot of social pressure from family and friends to be choosy.

I'm sure not all of them are, just perhaps a higher % of their populace to where it's noticeably different.
