RIP Benoit Mandelbrot

October 17, 2010 – Comments (7)

Polish born mathematician, IBM scientist, father of Fractals, the Chaos Theory, and the Mandelbrot Set, mentor to Nassim (The Black Swan) Taleb- passed at his home, age 85. Brilliant man.
Here is what his Fractal mathematical theory looks like- way cool original works by a guy I used to pal around with in H.S. Jeff is easy to work with if you can come up with a marketable app. Tell him Mark in Reno sent you. Just a few of thousands- explore!
Here is a timely interview on PBS with Taleb-
Benoit Mandelbrot thinks we're all screwed
Also rec this series-Hunting the hidden dimension - pt 1 Regards all.

The (Mis)behavior of Markets is a great book.

I want to read these but they are expensive, maybe I can find them at the library.

That's really too bad, he did a lot of really original research.

I love Fractal geometry. I rack my brain to figure if one could create some sort of Mandelbrot set for stocks.

Any ideas?

And make some CAPS picks, for crying out loud.

Blesto, I hope you explored Jeff's site. As for stock algorythms, Porte has posted his, the basis for his "chart" many times. Here is a link if you would like to know more about the basis of HFT- which is 70+% of market "activity", see this:

It's simple, really- the Chaos theory is about diversion/conversion from/to the "norm". It's called channeling. It takes a moment to load Nanex, but well worth exploring. Read about the multitude of "Flash Crashes". Good background. As for the caps game, I play to win and that means 'gaming the game" which I don't have time for. Best
