Dear Fools,

A couple of nights ago I was walking through my house and heard a funny sound coming from what seemed like inside the wall. Sure enough when I made it downstairs to the laundry room, there was a nice puddle of water. Suspicion confirmed: A busted pipe. Panic set in as I scrambled to locate the main water shutoff.  Long story short, I got the water turned off and called the plumber.

The next day the plumber made it over and, after cutting a nice hole in the wall (thankfully the piano is covering that up right now), fixed the pipe. Problem solved, no worries, everything is gold Jerry, GOLD! Even better, we still have the home warranty, so the financial damages are next to nothing.

After the plumber left, I got to thinking that while I had an idea of what the problem was from the beginning, I didn’t have the know-how or the tools to take care of it. The plumber on the other hand had both! Now am I incapable of learning about plumbing? Of course not. I bet if I wanted to and had the time I could learn more about it. Even still, without the right tools plumbing, much like investing, is a hopeless cause. What’s worse, it can even be dangerous.

As Fools, we all have something to offer; our experiences as investors. This can help in our pursuit of the “know-how” we all can use to become better investors. And tools like Foolsaurus, My Watchlist, My Scorecard, our 13 Steps to Investing Foolishly and even the discussion boards can help us find the way. So get out there and peruse the Foolish community with the goal of not only learning, but teaching as well. Now, I think it’s about time we started a Foolish plumbing discussion board.

Fool on!

Activision Blizzard

Games are making a little bit of a comeback, and just in time! According to NPD Group, November video game sales in the U.S. rose 8% from a year ago to a whopping $2.29 billion (yep, that’s with a “b”), no doubt with a little help from the release of Call of Duty: Black Ops. The bad news is that year-to-date sales are still down, but hey we take what we can get in an economy like this, right?

It will be a little while before we can fully understand the impact of World of Warcraft: Cataclysm. The game  is now out in full force and I expect to see big numbers for this one as well. Considering there are over 12 million World of Warcraft subscribers around the globe, Cataclysm is sure to be yet another game changer from the world’s number one video game publisher.

Ameris Bancorp

Our little bank in Georgia is bound to be one of the quieter stocks in the portfolio as it just goes about its business down south. Ameris did make a recent management change though as Andrew Cheney will be assuming the positions of President and Chief Operating Officer now for Ameris Bank, the wholly-owned bank subsidiary of Ameris Bancorp. The new appointment will help spread some of the workload, as the bank continues to expand its footprint. Though Cheney has only been with Ameris since 2009, he is a 30-year veteran of the banking industry and is very familiar with the southeast market.

Higher One

In case you missed it, I found something interesting in Higher One’s most recent 10Q that made me wonder if we might see a better price in the not too distant future. Read about it here.
