Security Costs Crazy

The security costs of the 2010 Olympics in BC next year have a price tag of $1 billion...

A few get rich off this kind of thing, but for the taxpayer, well, it is pay, pay, pay, pay.

They raved about how beneficial the 1986 Expo was to Vancouver, but from my view that event marked the beginning of the great widening in the level of wealth, starting with those in post education who found money for student loads was tight and tuition fees started skyrocketing.

The almost 40% of immigrants to Canada settling in BC over the next 10-15 years just ensured housing was never affordable again.

This event is going to cost taxpayers a bundle for years.

There are two types of companies that get into big contracts like for the olympics

1. The majority of bidding companies, who have no idea what they are getting into. The winner will low-ball the thing and probably go bankrupt after its over.

2. Those with government connections who either get sole sourced their contracts or disqualify all the competitors and make incredible amounts of money.

I was just in montreal not too long ago. I never got to visit the biodome that got built for their olympics, but i heard that it was a huge waste of money.

Hosting an Olympics is a bad idea if you live in that city.

This is why the idea of a permanent olympic village someplace that is used for all the summer games (and a similar one for the winter games) would same money. Unfortunately it isn't politically do-able because people would oppose it being in any other country but their own. (Of course I vote for putting it in Canada ...)

At least you'll get to see the olympics. I'm 6000km away but I'll pay for the olympics through my taxes.

Regardless of the cost, I've been to 3 Olympic Games and they have been the most experiences ever. The energy and excitement is unmatchable. I plan to go to Vancouver for my 4th Olympics.

As a taxpayer, I'd rather pay for the Olympics than any USELESS bailout!

Yes, nothing is more important than watching a select group of people who are very good at something that benefits no one
