September, historically a bad month for stocks...

October 05, 2009 – Comments (4)

I know I'm a month late on this, but I'm just wondering how many people do indeed invest based on the past. I know that at the beginning of September there were quite a few posts here (as well as analyst's recs on CNBC) about September being bad, and people being better off selling, etc.

Btw., The market was up 3.6% during the month of September...

September is going to be a good month.

Well everyone to a certain extent invests based on history right???

After-all isn't "buy and hold" based on the historic success of this strategy.  And funamentally all bullishness is based on a belief in future growth based on historical precident.

Now as for these little pop-quiz-ish factoids, no I certainly do not invest based on them.

I don't regret selling in September. It was the correct thing to do for me and I don't see myself buying much of anything until November. This market is overdue to pull back some and the risk that it may take another dive is still present.

I do regret no selling in September.

2007, that is!

And when I failed to sell in September 2007, I should have sold in September 2008.

2009 is something entirely different. The people who sold in September for no other reason than that September is typically a bad month for stocks are clueless. They are the same people who put their money on red (or black) because the previous 10 times black came up: they see a pattern where there is none!

Considering the number of CAPS players who see conspiracies everywhere, this kind of thinking really does not surprise me...
