The swine flu has hospitalized many young people in an aboriginal community.  The average age of those hospitalized is 35.

An early story I read on this one also talked about the school and lots of students suffering from the flu.

What I said earlier is that school are a hub for spreading disease, and with the rush to make cuts janitorial services have been cut making the spread of disease through school more likely.  Our janitorial services to our school just had a large cut. 

The community I am in had something like 85% of the population wiped out in the 1918 flu.  The population went from something like 2000 to about 300.

And look at the consequences of the flu in the Manitoba community, people with other medical needs are having their procedures delayed.

They are borrowing ventilators to handle the hospitalizations.  If this spreads how many ventilators will there be available to borrow?

That is a very practical, insightful, and worrisome comment on pandemic...or even a significant outbreak.  While everyone is worrying about Tamiflu and looking at the vaccine makers, it's the secondary and tertiary effects that really mount up.

My wife (also a school teacher) and I are keeping the jury out on this one.  While the big media outlets have pretty much dropped coverage altogether, we're still looking at the stories that do filter through...and I'm try to factor in an Outbreak-like scenario on my view of the economy and ongoing good and bad news.

As far as personal preparation--there really isn't much you can do, practically speaking, unless you are willing to a) stock up on Tamiflu, b) volunteer to be a guinea pig for a new vaccine, or c) cut off all interaction with society and move to a lone cabin in the woods.

Got any cabins for sale in your neck of the woods, dwot?

That's where I was supposed to go for a doctor's appointment next week ...
