Take your shot at $2,000

June 08, 2008 – Comments (3) | RELATED TICKERS: CBI , NDAQ , WATG.DL

Poking around CAPS this morning and found the Christmas in July contest.  I'm not much for short-term investng but it's pretty hard to pass up a chance at $2,000.

Trouble is, the cash doesn't kick in unless 500 investors sign up for the contest. Only 124 entries are live as of this writing.  What do you say? Care to join?

I've tickered three of my top picks for the contest.

Foolish best,

I've got my 12 picks locked and loaded for Monday.  I got 12th in the last one but held first for a couple moments (fleeting moments)....  There was a pretty vicious fight for the top 10 in the last contest.  Since it was only watercooler stocks, for the most part they were huge heavily covered stocks with less likelihood of swinging big up or down.  Now since it's just past 5 star stocks, it could be anything from small caps to mega caps, exploratory oil/gas stocks, ipo's, and other less heavily discussed but really strong stuff, etc.  My guess is that the leader this time will lead by a huge margin by picking a couple massive winners.  Should be interesting to see.

I got killed in water cooler but I'm holding on decently in the election contest. Normally I just pick some of my best portfolio choices and throw them on the contest list, but a lot of those were better picks when I first picked them and don't have as much room to improve right now.

So this time, for the Christmas contest, I used a totally different approach and instead of pulling picks from my Caps list I intentionally sought out a category of securities not well represented in my main portfolio. In the process I found some good ones and added 4 or 5 of the 12 back into my Caps list (and put in a buy order for one in my real portfolio). 2 of the picks were already in my portfolio, the rest are new. And I'm doing it straight up, all of them are green thumb picks. (Getting tired of the peanut gallery accusing top-500 players of not being able to perform without red-thumb calls so I guess I better make believers out of them.)

I think I can do pretty well this time but I'll be totally shocked if 500 players sign up for the contest. Maybe we need to get that guy who recc's outperform pitches for Exmocare to sign up all 300 of his accounts.

Hey Tim,

Mine are in. You can now tell Tom & Dave to make the check out to me. I'll even accept a post-dated check. I'll hold it until the contest is over, just in case there are any concerns of impropriety. Just trying to make their lives a little bit easier by helping them process things more efficiently...

P.S. And I promise to tell you how I picked the stocks that will win (have won?) this contest, but for now, the secret is all mine! Bawahahahahaha!
