Tech Giants Gettin' Sassy
So as most people who follow technology know, this week has had some major announcements... Most centered around Microsoft.
For one, Google is bringing the fight to the operating system and releasing an OS.
For two, Microsoft counterpunched by taking the sheets off a new Office that will include a free web-based component which aims to stifle Google's own Docs program.
For three, Microsoft announced some firm pricing and more details for its cloud computing platform: Azure.
In an e-mail to reporters, cloud competitor salesforce.com had this to say about Azure:
"When Microsoft, the company that has the most to lose from cloud computing, enters the market, you know that 'The End of Software' has arrived," Salesforce.com VP of strategy Bruce Francis said in an e-mail. "However, instead of solving the problems of the cost and complexity of client server, Microsoft is just moving those problems to the cloud. We believe that Azure will do for cloud computing what the Zune has done for media players."
Wow, nice low blow. Perhaps in a follow-up Google can say Bing has down for Microsoft what Bill Gates did for women's sexual libidos.
And finally to wrap this up, Steve Ballmer responded to one of Microsoft's greatest threats yet by... laughing at it:
Not to say that the Google threat is as great as many are making it out to be, but laughing about Chrome onstage will just makes the company sound arrogant, and unlikeable. (A problem they've been fighting for, well, let's just call it forever)
Very catty stuff.
