Been long since Speedy mentioned them a while back. Sinch I was wondering what you thought of the explorers here (in particular, PC Gold, Barkerville and others) I am looking to build positions in these over the next few months. Thanks

SN,

I sold my entire stake in Barkerville after Vancouver. I'm not really able to explain why ... just a vibe I guess.

PC is very high risk despite the recent drill result. The market has clearly indicated its skepticism that a producing mine will result, and until the market begins to catch a different scent I will not be increasing my stake in such a high-risk play. I remain hopeful, but cautiously so.

SN,

Additionally, and generally speaking, I don't consider this the best juncture at which to be committing cash reserves.I am wary of macro risks at present, and looking to keep some cash in reserves. I'm looking to sell into this strength rather  than buying into it.

That being said, I like the well-funded AND undervalued explorers here, namely Pilot Gold and Sabina Gold & Silver. I bought both aggressively during the worst levels of 2011, and expect both to deliver handsome returns.

Update:

I recently sold my entire stake in Barkerville, and will be watching this story from the sidelines from this point forward. I think they have uncovered a phenomenal mineral deposit, but I do not have the necessary confidence in company management to retain investment exposure.

For me personally, I've determined I have all the high-risk vehicles I need right now to deliver a powerful outcome in the scenario of an extended rally here combined with strategic execution by one or more of the companies in question.

Where I'm underweight right now is in low and zero risk assets like cash, cash-rich profitable producers, cash-rich explorers with existing undervalued assets with an elevated likelihood of seeing production, etc. I'm looking to address that, so my own emphasis at present is driven in that direction.

I've never heard of them. I'll add them to my list, but frankly thst list is already hopelessly long. :). There are only so many companies a Fool can keep straight in his mind, and I've just about reached that saturation point with the few hundred companies I do attempt to keep tabs on.

Sorry... I need to stay foused on the companies that I'm presently tracking for now. That said, if developments arise that demand a loser look, I know that you and others will remind me to have another look. For that I am more grateful than you could know.

Ivanhoe Appoints UBS to Find Strategic Partner

By David Winning and Robb. M. Stewart

Ivanhoe Australia has hired UBS to help find strategic partners for a string of Australian base metals projects as it vies to secure long-term funding to bring them into production.

The move to start a formal sales process comes nearly eight months after Ivanhoe Australia began sounding out potential investors, and is a further sign that interest in industrial metals remains robust despite a shaky global economic outlook.

The process to bring in strategic partners is likely to last two to three months, said Peter Reeve, chief executive of Ivanhoe Australia, which is majority owned by Canada’s Ivanhoe Mines.

Detailed discussions have been held with a number of unnamed parties over the past few months, he said in a telephone interview.

“Part of UBS’s role in this will be to organize and structure the process, and to bring in others,” Reeve told Deal Journal Australia.

Ivanhoe Australia is seeking to sell minority stakes in its Cloncurry projects, moves that would secure funding see them through to production. Potential partners include mining companies and commodity trading houses in Australia and abroad, he said.

The company is set to begin production in March at its Osborne copper and gold project, which it bought from Barrick Gold Corp. in 2010. Its Cloncurry portfolio also includes the Merlin molybdenum-rhenium project, Mount Dore cathode copper project and Mount Elliott copper-gold project.

Ivanhoe Australia is 59% owned by Ivanhoe Mines, and its chairman is Ivanhoe Mines founder and CEO Robert Friedland. Anglo-Australian mining titan Rio Tinto this month took majority control of Ivanhoe Mines, increasing its stake two percentage points to 51%.

Rio in a filing last week to the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission said it anticipated replacing some of the management and at least a majority of the non-Rio appointed directors at Ivanhoe Mines, although it doesn’t currently have any plans for a shakeup. It also reserved the right to make other changes at the Vancouver-based company.

“For us, it’s business as usual,” Reeve said, adding Ivanhoe Australia’s management was focused on developing its projects.

He said none of the parties the company has held discussions with has proposed a broader deal than a minority interest in a project, but he added there was always the possibility “doing something bigger.”

Ivanhoe Australia’s shares closed 2.1% lower at A$1.885, giving it a market value of roughly A$1.06 billion (US$1.13 billion).

By ROBB M. STEWART

MELBOURNE, Australia—Rio Tinto PLC expects to make management changes at Ivanhoe Mines Ltd. after grabbing majority control of the Canadian mining company, and may seek direct ownership in the massive Oyu Tolgoi copper-and-gold project in Mongolia.

The Anglo-Australian mining company said in a U.S. regulatory filing Thursday that it doesn't currently have any plans to shake up Ivanhoe, though it anticipates replacing some managers and at least a majority of those directors not appointed by Rio. The company said the change would give it more than a majority on the Ivanhoe board.

Rio reserved the right to increase its holding in Ivanhoe as well as the right to make proposals "alone or with a third-party" regarding Ivanhoe's existing investment, ownership in Oyu Tolgoi or other changes, according to its filing Thursday with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission.

Rio earlier this week said it has bought an additional 15.1 million shares of Ivanhoe, increasing its interest to 51% from 49% at a cost of 302 million Canadian dollars ($301 million). It said it has no current plans to buy more shares.

In a response to the filing, Ivanhoe said Friday that it expects its 14-member board to maintain a majority of independent directors. Ivanhoe said Rio as part of a 2010 pact agreed that at least eight directors would be independent until Jan. 18, 2014 or until which time Ivanhoe ceases to be a Canadian public company. Deputy Chairman Peter Meredith in the statement also said the composition of Ivanhoe's management team is a board responsibility.

Ivanhoe owns 66% and Mongolia's government the remaining 34% of Oyu Tolgoi, which is expected to be one of the world's largest mines when fully operational. Annual output in the first 10 years is projected to average 1.2 billion pounds of copper, 650,000 troy ounces of gold and more than three million ounces of silver.

Rio is operator of the project, which is due to begin commercial production in the middle of 2013. Rio has steadily increased its holding in Ivanhoe over the past two years, and effectively controls the Vancouver-based company's board, with three employees and four nominees among the 14 directors.
